Music can be one of the best ways to fuel a creativity kick-start when you are feeling out of ideas or gearing up to tackle a big project. And while your trusty music library full of carefully cultivated playlists and old favorites can help do the trick, there is something about checking out new music that can infuse fresh energy into your creative attitude.
As an equal opportunity employer when it comes to music, I’m open to listening to anything once. When those first few notes hit my ears I start to feel a reaction in my physical body, as it helps me make the decision if I want to listen more. This very instinctual feeling is one of my creative reflexes at work, inviting me to dive in deeper and see where the music takes me next.
Is it something I would listen to again? What emotions are getting stirred within me when I hear it? What images are popping into my minds eye? What is my energy level like?
It’s not that similar reactions don’t happen when listening to familiar artists, but a music library can bring you more into the past, reconnecting you with older feelings rather than inspiring new ideas that can move you forward into a fresh creative space.
Connecting with New Sources of Musical Inspiration
So many online music players have suggestions for new artists based on what you are already listening to, but why not just pick something completely random? Better yet, go listen to a live local band you have never heard of before or ask friends for some suggestions to explore new artists.
If you are inspired by music, it can help to track down a meditation or chakra balancing recording to listen to before you start your day or sit down to brainstorm or create. Music that really resonates with all of your senses helps you feel relaxed and ready for inspiration to flow freely, with all of you tuned in and ready to receive. In this space you are experiencing creativity in its most natural flow, while also receiving an internal energy balance.
The best part about new music is the sense of discovery you can feel when connecting with a new artist, or the way your body moves with the flow as you open up, letting the notes wash over you. New music can also bring in feelings of love and passion as you become smitten with something fresh that feeds your spirit.
So, are you a musical adventurist? Or do you go back to the tried and true when searching for creative inspiration? Better yet, do you have some great suggestions for music I should check out?
